Rebecca Horner is a BA Hons Textiles and Surface Designer. She is extremely innovative and open minded when it comes to design and uses child like media such as "glitter and glue" to create sophisticated pieces of artwork. Meadham Kirchhoff 's work has inspired Rebecca as they are not afraid to push limits and boundaries which may be shocking to some people but great conversational pieces for others. This concept shows the modern day women as they see themselves today. They are not pretty dolls but are creative, feisty not afraid to be controversial but still show beauty in a more innovative and quirky way.

DO YOU HAVE A TALENT? GO FOR IT

This is absolute-freaking-ly amazing. I could not resist the urge to share. I hope you like it.

Something to learn: Follow your dreams. Whatever you want to do, it's never too late to start; discover that talent inside of you and harness it. I like the fact that parents today allow their kids to pursue their talents.

When I was younger, same age with Malaki I know all I ever wanted to do was stay on the computer and tap buttons. I joined the computer club in secondary school and I liked everything that had to do with technology, when friends buy new phones I usually teach them how to access the functions even without reading a manual. I literally sit in front of a computer and explore, learning new things every day with no help from any tutor. I knew what I wanted to study in the university - Computer Engineering but daddy won't let me. He always said 'choose between medicine, pharmacy or law', engineering is for boys'  (loll). I was so sad but I couldn't choose for myself then and somehow found myself as a medical student in the university, a course I never wanted especially as I can't even stand the sight of blood or the hospital environment itself. To cut the long story short, I couldn't follow my heart as a child but as I grew older I took few courses in IT and till date I still learn about IT.

So dear readers, when your child has a talent and wants to pursue it...encourage them. My younger brother Alex wants to be a professional footballer and also has a passion for music/dance. Unlike me, dad allowed him follow his dreams (maybe cos he's the last child), he also encouraged him by getting him into the young team of Pepsi Football Club. So while studying he goes for his practice and has been a good defender and  a very great entertainer on the dance floor.
Lexy at 10 doing what he loves, sorry I couldn't get his football pix.

It's good to discover these talents at a young age so that you will channel your focus towards actualizing that dream. Looking at Malaki and Alex, I can imagine what they will become in the future.  If you have a talent...GO FOR IT, explain to mum & dad; i'm sure they'll understand and encourage you. If you discover it late, there's still time for you to pursue it. As an adult it could even be a second source of income outside your regular job. I've seen engineers become chefs (Edoro Abebe-CEO Vanilla Restaurant, Abuja); another engineer turned photographer (Jide Alakija photography), lawyer turned actress (Funke Akindele a.k.a Jenifa), Harvard graduate of Economics turned basket-ball player (Jeremy Lin - plays for New York Knicks). I could go on and on with different people who discovered their talent and turned it into a treasure. Same can happen for you. Just GO FOR IT.

>>DESIGN CONTEST - DORCHESTER COLLECTION

Penulis : Unknown on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 | 5:09 AM

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

I recently received the latest information from the PR for the Dorchester Collection fashion contest. The 2012 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize carries an endowment of €30,000 and will be awarded to the gifted designer of ready-to-wear or premium accessories to help establish their brand. This year's entries must be based in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg or Switzerland; have an established design business: and have operated their brand for a minimum of two years.

Application details are available for download on the Dorchester Collection website (www.dorchestercollection.com) and registration is open until May 31, 2012.

Dorchester Collection hotels are in major fashion capitals worldwide and their unique heritage contributed to the establishment of the Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize in 2010 - the first award of its kind developed by a luxury hotel company.  The prize rotates around the Dorchester Collection hotels: The 2012 host venue Hotel Plaza Athenee ,  is steeped in the fashion history, making it an ideal locale for the year's ongoing events. Inspired by its elegance, Christian Dior, who set up his couture house nearby, named several designs after the hotel, including the "Plaza" and the "Athenee"suits. Dior's groundbreaking couture collections were often photographed at Hotel Plaza Athenee,  which he considered his "second home".

"America's Next Top Model: British Invasion" on April 25, 2012

April 26, 2012 (London) - Scenes from the 2011 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize Grand Final event, filmed at The Rodeo Ballroom at The Beverly Hills Hotel, were featured on America's Next Top Model: British Invasion. The episode aired on The CW on April 25th from 9:00-10:00pm ET/PT.

The episode featured scenes where the models go to castings for the opportunity to open a fashion show for one of the 2011 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize finalists. Kelly Cutrone and Nigel Barker joined guest judge Georgina Chapman of Marchesa, also a 2011 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize Judge, as well as Tyra Banks on the judges' panel for elimination.

The  models  chosen  in  the  casting  took  part  in  the  Grand Final event of the 2011 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize including a spectacular runway presentation in front of fashion's elite. After a tense deliberation, siblings Phoebe and Annette Stephens of Anndra Neen were determined to have best evoked the spirit of individuality, luxury, style and craftsmanship that characterize Dorchester Collection's iconic hotels. Their work also demonstrated critical distinction and the potential for future commercial success and as a result, they were awarded a US $40,000 prize and the opportunity to display their work at Dorchester Collection's iconic Hôtel Plaza Athénée during Paris Fashion Week in 2012, host of this year's Fashion Prize.

MONEY AMPLIFIES YOUR CHARACTER

Money! Money!! Money!!!

There can never be enough words to talk about money or to explain what money does and how it works. We can never get enough of it, always striving for more and aiming to increase our bank accounts with an extra zero by the side. But one thing I learnt today is that “money amplifies your character”. Nothing reveals the inner thoughts of a man’s heart or character such as money. Why is it that some people become arrogant or selfish when money is involved? Suddenly brothers kill each other; plotting evil strategies just because of money, trust is betrayed and some people don’t mind ruining long time relationships with friends just to get what they want. But looking back at how these people lived before the incidents caused by money, you’ll find out that most of them are said to be gentle, calm and cool-headed. This may be true but like the bible says, “the love of money is the root of all evil." Money has a power/force behind it and it can either work positively or negatively depending on how you choose to let it function in your life. When you worship money and see it as a major priority that you are willing to do absolutely anything to get, then you’re going to dine with the devil. But if you see money as a necessary commodity to meet your needs, then you’ll be activating the positive influence of money. Don’t have the mentality of ‘get rich or die trying’ cos you may die in the process. It doesn’t have to be physical death but when you are a walking corpse as a result of your evil deeds, it’s as good as being dead. Don’t let the love of money get into your head so much that it forms the basis of your decisions and over-shadows your sense of reasoning. Learn to control money at your own pace, let it be a means to solving problems instead of allowing it use your head to cause more problems.

Also, what we do with money shows our priority and what we’re really committed to in life. How do you spend your money? (I’m not trying to tell you how to, justasking). Do you invest your money or do you squander it cos it’s just too much? Are you thinking of only yourself (that’ll be selfish, #justsaying) or do you think of helping others? Do you prefer to step on the beggar at the entrance to a club and go in to spray money on strip dancers or will you have compassion and spare him some change? Are you stingy because you made your money through so many struggles? Have you decided not to pay your tithe because you think pastors are eating your money? The truth is where you spend majority of your money is where your heart lies and shows what you’re committed to.

Luke 12:34, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”

Do you love money? Don’t let it control you, do the right thing and it’ll gravitate towards you. You don’t have to chase it with haughty eyes…it'll come naturally.
Do you have too much money and thinking of how to spend it? Put it into good use to enjoy your life and to uplift others. Invest it & help the needy
Are you wondering what best investments to make with your money? Be a kingdom fnancier and invest in spreading the word of God round the world. It has the best returns ever, it’s stock and shares are to infinity – good measure, pressed down, shaking together and running over J
Are you stingy with money? Learn to give cos money will naturally gravitate to people who know how to use it. If you don’t use it, it’ll slip away. Also, it’s only when your hand is open that you’ll be able to receive more.
Are you suddenly proud cos you just added some zeros to your bank account? Watch it…pride goeth before a fall; it is just money not a ticket to heaven. Even if it were, you may not get there cos of your pride.

Finally my sweeties, MONEY IS GOOD, it solves a lot of problems. Just don’t let it control you cos it’ll mess with you mercilessly. As for me I’m an ATM (Associate of The Most High) and I intend to invest my money in the kingdom, take this decision with me and you’ll be a walking ATM machineJ.

>>FEATURED DESIGNER AND ILLUSTRATOR - KAT SPENCER

Featured artist is Surface Pattern Designer and Illustrator Kat Spencer. Her featured work are some of my favorite ones, so colorful, bold and beautifully done. I also love how she applies her prints on sketch line drawings so you can view her intended application. Her work is distinctive with her unique approach of modernising traditional cultural motifs.  The media she uses to create her designs starts with photography,  pen and ink illustrations taken from nature. She then applies a combination of hand crafting techniques, using inks, beads and stitch work.

Kat is also very skilled in advanced CAD techniques using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
