7 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE MOVING TO THE UK

Penulis : Unknown on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 | 12:14 PM

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

You finally got that visa...yayyy so now you're ready to bolt down to the UK. I was just like you three years ago, flipping through the pages of my passport as I left the embassy. Still looking for the visa page, you needed to have seen the wide grin on my face when I saw the visa on the last page *dancing alanta*. All my antenna was raised as I earnestly prepared my Naija foods, warm clothes, my study documents cos I was going for my post-graduate degree and made sure my passport was safe till my departure date. I was so intrigued with the joy of leaving that I did not equip myself with the knowledge of my intended destination; I did not ask how the UK economy was or their way of live. I only focused on the education and believed that when I get there, everything will fall into place... and yeah they did eventually but looking back at three years ago, I wish I knew then what I know now. I am not where I would have wanted to be but I am happy for how far I have come despite my ignorance of my environment at that time.

So if you have plans of coming to the UK -whether for studies or for work and you intend to stay for a long time; these are few of the things you need to know before making your trip.

1) Prepare your mind: The most important thing is to first prepare your mindset for the new environment and decide to embrace it with enthusiasm. Forget any negative stories you've heard and decide to create your own beautiful story. Focus on your goal, your ability to fix your eyes on the reason you came will help you not get distracted or influenced.

2) UK's culture of individualism - Individualism as defined in the dictionary is a belief in the primary importance of the individual and in the virtues of self-reliance and personal independence. Unlike Nigeria, (collectivist country) it is believed that you are O.Y.O (on your own) and 90% of the time you must learn to D.I.Y (do it yourself). In Nigeria, we practice collectivism which stresses the importance of cohesion in groups eg family ties - uncles & aunties who were not born by your grand parents but still part of the family. We love being in groups and create bonds that are not easily broken, so don't expect too much from anyone cos they expect you to be independent. However, God will always place the right people in your path to help you but you need to be aware of the culture.

3) Working in the UK: As soon as you come in - first thing is to get your National Insurance (NI) number and begin your search. You're at a better advantage if you have a previous UK experience prior to your job search. If you don't... God dey, you can start by taking professional courses to improve yourself. It is also wise to do a volunteer job or internship for few months and then hit the job market. As a student, your school will always have  a career department; they'll be very helpful. Also, register free with Sponsors for Educational Opportunity http://www.seo-london.com/ to help maximize your opportunity for career success. Apply for summer/spring internships to boost your CV and give you that UK experience; before you graduate you'll get job offers from big multinationals and kick-start your dream career. Visit SEO and read testimonials for more inspiration. #wishiknewaboutSEOin2011

4) Accommodation: Students you may not have any problem with this if your accommodation has been provided by the school. If you're not, or if you're here to work - I'll advise you go for a house that is "bills inclusive". So that if anything goes wrong e.g. slow internet, no heating (during winter), no water, electricity goes off; all you need to do is call your landlord and he/she fixes it. If your accommodation is without bills, more work for you cos you have to do the duties yourself. You shall become electrician by force (D.I.Y thingz). It's best to make things easier for you when you're still fresh in the system and when you get used to the environment you can take responsibility of topping up.

5) Stop the currency conversion: I see most people who come for vacation and convert the price of every item before they buy it. PLS STOP IT if you're here to stay for a long time cos you'll just vex and not buy anything. If you used to be extravagant, learn to be prudent and not buy everything you see. The economy here is different and you cannot expect it to reflect what you were used to back home. Just re-adjust and gradually get used to it. Yes, things are expensive (especially if you live in London) but this is why you should learn to buy the things you need not impulsive buying. If not, your N1,000,000.00 that you thought was big money when you came will vanish in 30 days.

6) Networking: Some people have been in UK for over 9 years and the only friends they have are Nigerians. Haba... why na? Networking helps in many ways especially if you're thinking of going very far here so mix up and make friends with people from all backgrounds, race, colour, religion. Employers need to know that you have a good interpersonal skills.

7) PUSH: You must learn to push your way through. Surprisingly, there are still some parts of the UK where racism is still high; you need to stand firm and not sulk at every unkind word spoken to you cos of your skin colour. Never see yourself as disadvantaged or limited; just keep pushing your way through.

Lastly SHINE YA EYES... There are lot's of opportunities if you keep yourself informed at all times. Ask as many questions as you can; there will be people willing to answer you. If not Google is your best friend, ask google.

PS: There is no "owambe" here, where you get invited for a party to chop free rice, chicken, pomo, shaki etc; so if you're invited for a party or any outing, better carry your money cos you're in an individualistic country so ain't nobody paying for your food. O.Y.O #oyolowa

Hope this was helpful...

FASHION TREND ALERT: BRINGING BACK THE 40s MIDI SKIRTS

Penulis : Unknown on Thursday, November 21, 2013 | 3:01 PM

Thursday, November 21, 2013

The 40s fashion is definitely back in style. Lately, midi skirts have become the latest trend in women's fashion coming in different colours, designs and fabrics. I particularly love the classy and chic look it gives (depending on what top/shirt you pair it with).

The midi skirt can serve all purposes - to work, church, wedding, lunch; it is a perfect meet-the-parents outfit. This skirt is my current obsession so I decided to share with you on how you can pair it when you get yours. These fashionistas did justice to the midi skirt and I just couldn't resist posting them.

Their speciality is in working with designers, product development and sourcing to meet their needs in footwear design. Some of their clients include UGG, DKNY, Adidas and Vans to name a few.  Go here to learn more about their company.

Here is a preview of their Spring/Summer 2015 trends where you can view the entire report here for their colors and materials. Their trends are inspired by 4 concepts: Pacific Coast Highway, Cloud Life, Green Tea and Sands of Zanzibar.

   PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY

Ahhh... California circa 1955, the land of dreams. Cruising down the freeway in a Chevy Bel Air, heading to a party in the valley to stand around the pool sipping gimlets. It’s the heyday of American optimism, opportunity is everywhere, and the future is as bright as the Santa Monica sun. Fashion recreates the laid-back spirit of California cool which infused everything from art and architecture to music and film, and capturing the playful hedonism of the west coast, mid-century. Carefree classics are revisited with a fresh perspective and a neo-nonchalance and re-colored in a range of sunny side-up shades of surf and suburbs.

   CLOUD LIFE

Minimizing clutter, maximizing experience -- welcome to the cloud, where everything is at your fingertips but not necessarily within arm’s reach. The new minimalism is not about deprivation, it’s a pragmatic approach to instant gratification. Living large by living light. The new dis-ownership lifestyle frees us up to experience life fully without being weighed down by stuff. iTunes and Netflix mean that books, music and movies no longer take up space on the shelves, there’s no need to worry about oil changes or inspection stickers when there’s Zipcar, and why splurge on that special catwalk creation when you can rent the runway.com? Fashion is a reflection of the simplicity and mobility of the story: simple pieces edited to perfection, a clean slate to embellish or not. The color palettes rely on clean shades of white and blue set against river stone taupes, with the occasional expressive pop.

   GREEN TEA

Take a break from the pulsing streets of Tokyo to enjoy a quiet moment of calm in a side street tea house. Holding a bowl of tea whisked to a fine froth. Such a simple thing filled with a spirit that reaches back more than a thousand years. The tea ceremony developed under the influence of Zen Buddhism, seeks to purify the soul by becoming one with nature and find harmony with all things. The fashion statement reflects the Japanese worldview of wabi sabi: calm, graceful, austere and simple with playful notes of kawaii, an exaggerated cuteness and innocence. The color palette is a naturally balanced range of earth, sky and sea, lightened with mochi pinks and greens.

   SANDS OF ZANZIBAR

Depart the verdant shores of Tanzania for a breath-taking dhow ride across the turquoise Indian Ocean. We are approaching Zanzibar, the idyllic palm-fringed Spice Island that is the intersection of Arabic, Indian and European culture. Meander through the winding streets of Stone Town past Arabic palaces, Indian merchant homes, English manor houses and Portuguese chapels. An eclectic fashion statement reflects this cultural crossroads -- beachy, breezy beauty blowing in from east and west. The color palette is a spicy range of nutmeg, cardamom and cinnamon, set against the electric turquoise of the sea and the shady fronds of a native palm.

DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHAT PEOPLE THINK/SAY?

Penulis : Unknown on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 | 12:35 PM

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

As my dad smacked me in the head, I grudgingly walked away not understanding why the visitor could not use the long glass I had brought for him to drink the red wine my dad had set on the table. I went back to the wine glass rack and pulled out the glass with the wider base for the visitor to use... still wondering why he could not use the first glass cup I brought. From then till now I still can't understand why the white wine glass is different from the red wine glass - not that there are no explanations but I just can't understand why there should be a reason. Does it really matter if you pour the white wine in a red wine glass or vice versa? Will it change the taste of the wine? Does the shape of the glass cup allow a free flow of the wine into the mouth? If you present a visitor with a white wine and give him/her a red wine glass, does that make you a bad host? I'm still wondering why....because in the end, all that matters is the wine went from the glass into your mouth; your tongue enjoyed the taste of the wine which then passed through your oesophagus into your stomach and ends up in the toilet as urine. Following this life cycle of the wine, again I ask - does it really matter what glass you drink your wine in?

It's interesting how most of us live our lives with so much headache on what type of glass to drink our wine from. Yes ... you reading this article. What am I trying to say? In the journey of life, it really doesn't matter where you are at or what stage in life you are at presently. All that matters is that you're not at one spot - you're moving forward and making progress. It also doesn't matter what people think/say about you; understand that there will always be critics who stand on the way throwing tantrums at you and telling you how they expect your life to be or how they think you're not doing something well. These people act like the day you were born, there was a slot for their signature on your birth certificate. They expect you to be at a certain level at a certain age in your life and when you're not there yet; they make you feel miserable about it because according to them "your mates" have all achieved so and so while you're yet to get there. They always have "when" and "why" questions such as - Daisy, Amaka is getting married next month so when is yours? Or, Lanre, Chudi has just bought a new BMW and built a new house for his parents so when are we seeing your handwork? The most common question for both male and female - so when are you getting married? Does it really matter when?

If you ever get these questions, your response should be - If I tell you when I will do these things, how will it affect your life? Will it add a cubit to your height or a pound to your flesh? As different as our faces are, so are our destinies; even twins do not have the same thumb print and do not have the same dreams or ambitions. That someone else is
drinking their white wine in a slender long glass does not mean it tastes better than yours because you're drinking from a wider base glass. I mean, someone else's success does not insinuate that you are not making progress in life so quit letting people control your life choosing what type of glass you have to drink your wine in. The igbos will say "ebe onye oso ruru ka onye ije g'eru" meaning - the person running and the person walking will both get to the same destination. Kinda reminds me of the bedtime stories about the tortoise, slow but steady showing that it's not about how fast your so called mates run but how well. Compare two people building houses - a skyscraper and a bungalow. When the bungalow is completed, the owner of the skyscraper will still be laying his foundation. But the people looking from outside will not understand; they will only see that two people started building together but one person finished before the other.

While beating yourself up about what type of glass to drink your wine from; remember that some people do not even have wine to drink talk more of choosing which glass to drink from. So when next those people come with their when and why questions; remind them that there are also some of those your mates who are 6 feet below the ground and couldn't live to enjoy the wine whether from a long slender glass or a wider base glass.

  • It's your life - choose to live it on God's purpose and plans for you, not what people think is best for you. God's time is the best and as long as you're walking in his plans for your life - what anybody thinks or says really doesn't matter.
  • Be motivated by other people's success and let it be a source of encouragement to you. Never envy anybody, you'll short-circuit that miracle in your life especially if it's something you desire. Instead celebrate people and you in will be celebrated.
  • Constantly push yourself to perform better than your past, not to compete with others. If your goal is to be better than that your flat mate or co-worker; you may end up frustrating yourself.
  • Don't let the world decide for you, let THE WORD decide for you. The wine is yours, you can even drink it with a tea cup...it's nobody's business as long a it's fine with God.
  • White wine or red wine, it doesn't really matter which glass you use as long as the wine gets into your mouth and serves its purpose. Therefore, whether fast or slow... it doesn't really matter as long as you just keep moving.
  • Always be thankful for having wine at least; there are people who don't have i.e. be thankful for life and for where God has brought you to.
  • Even when there is no glass to drink the wine, you can drink directly from the bottle. Meaning, when you're faced with obstacles - just take the bull by the horn and push your way through.
  • Never stop dreaming as long as you wake up and make it happen.

Have a beautiful week
